Mental health–related calls are among the most emotionally challenging and high-risk situations telecommunicators face. “Voices in Crisis” equips 9-1-1 professionals with the tools needed to confidently navigate suicidal callers, individuals in emotional distress, and mental health crises—while maintaining empathy, control, and clarity.

This session explores practical communication strategies, de-escalation techniques, and caller-management approaches that support both scene safety and emotional stabilization. Participants will learn how to recognize key behavioral indicators, respond to heightened emotions, apply grounding techniques, and maintain rapport during highly volatile calls. Special focus is placed on avoiding language that may escalate the situation and understanding how tone, pacing, and word choice directly impact outcomes.

Using real-world examples and evidence-informed practices, this training empowers call-takers to remain calm, compassionate, and effective—ensuring individuals in crisis feel heard, supported, and guided toward safety.
