NORTH PORT: FBI dive teams scoured a pond Thursday, searching for new evidence in the Denise Amber Lee murder case.

Michael King is accused of kidnapping and killing the North Port mother back in January. Investigators found her body near I-75.

The North Port Police called in agents from Tampa and Miami to help with this week’s search, which centered on a pond very close to where investigators found Lee’s body.

"We’ve got plenty of evidence against him (King), but any evidence will help," said Lee’s father, Rick Goff, a Charlotte County deputy.

Detectives already have done several searches like this, but Goff says the investigation turned to this pond because it was closest to her murder site.

FBI agents say a search this size takes a lot to organize.

"It was a fairly large scale response and so a lot of it had to do with coordinating schedules," said Lynn Billings, a Tampa FBI Team Leader.

Billings adds the FBI’s role in investigations is decided case by case. Departments often call the FBI in for big cases that draw a lot of attention.

In this case, investigators still haven’t found the murder weapon.

Teams searching today specialize in underwater evidence recovery - and for a body of water as large as the pond, advanced equipment is needed.

"Pretty much it’s all based on if we have some type of specialty we can assist them with," said Billings.

"It’s so big, we just had to make sure we got all the resources together," Goff said.

Detectives couldn’t say what they found. But Goff says he’s satisfied with this week’s work and ready to get the case wrapped up.

"I’m sure there’s going to be more. Like I said, we’ve still got a few ends to tie up," Goff said.

Though for this father, no amount of closure will bring his daughter back.
